The Gophers women’s basketball team failed to overcome 9th Maryland at Williams Arena on Thursday and fell to the high-flying Terrapins 90-73. Minnesota is the eighth defeat in the last nine games.
With an average of 92 points per game this season, Maryland’s Big Ten Best offense gave Minnesota a defensive fit each turn, shooting 45% off the field and knocking down 11 3 points.
Gophers held most of the first half themselves. Minnesota made only five of the 28 three-pointers against Pennsylvania State University on Sunday, then hit six threes, shooting half a shot in the first two quarters of Thursday, at 50-43. I dragged it.
But, as in many cases this season, the first half wasn’t a Minnesota issue. Minnesota lost to Pennsylvania State University and Iowa earlier this season after taking the lead in half-time, and after 11 leads in the break, it took overtime to defeat Wisconsin.
At the end of the third quarter, the deficit was 19 as Gophers was able to collect only 14 points in the frame.
Second grade guard Jasmine Powell led Minnesota with 22 points. Sarah Scalia returned to the lineup after playing against Pennsylvania State University due to a shoulder injury. She finished at 14.
