Waxhaw, NC (FOX 46 CHARLOTTE)-A dog attacked and seriously injured in a park in Waxhaw is recovering. A woman was also injured during the incident.

It wasn’t what everyone wanted to see on a beautiful Saturday afternoon in the park. The video showed a vicious attack on a horse named Queen Charlotte as people tried to control the dog.

The 14-year-old horse is expected to recover. The owner tells FOX46 that Queen Charlotte is one of the best horses he has and this is the first horse of the season.

“She’s great. She’s an extraordinarily big, strong and loyal horse,” said Bridger Medlin.

She uses people’s skills to put people like you and me on a beautiful carriage in the park.

“We’ve been doing that for 20 years. There have been no incidents in 20 years.”

Medlin said it was a shocking experience as they were just out for the first ride in a few months.

“It was the first day at Kane Creek Park this season.”

When something unexpected happens.

“There was a dog that got off the leash. Well, actually, I left the handler and the owner and started charging towards the carriage with the family with the kids there,” Medlin said. “It attacked the horse.”

The video shows the dog repeatedly chasing Queen Charlotte, despite being pulled, pushed, and kicked.

“There was probably 180-200 feet from where the attack started to where the video actually showed that the entire attack ended.”

Medlin said Queen Charlotte couldn’t do much, but tried to protect herself.

“Horse, their instinct is their tendency to fight or escape.”

Charlotte has been bitten more than 15 times, and Medlin says he acted with extreme calm during the attack.

“It’s been through all the time.”

To help heal the horse’s wounds, Medlin applies the prescribed ointment. He says it will take months for her to get back to work.

“She will let me know. If you are willing to listen, the horse will talk to you,” Medlin said. “When she and I go and spend one-on-one a few months ahead, if she likes it, I let her do it. If she shows me not, she I spend the rest of the year at this stall and eat me at home and outside. “

Medlin acknowledges Charlotte’s driver Amanda for jumping out of the carriage and trying to help. He says he knows that is a good reason for Charlotte to react like her.
