Albuquerque, New Mexico (KRQE) – Due to the wind, the dawn patrol was canceled this morning and a yellow flag was raised. A pilot briefing official said that if the balloon flies, the balloon will have one wave instead of two. Balloon personnel continued to monitor the wind throughout the morning, causing some balloons to inflate.
Over the last few days, weather has become a bigger factor in the event, as the massive rise on Saturday morning became a static display and the balloon glow on Saturday evening turned into a candlestick glow. Just above the state this morning is a region with deep cyclones. This affects our weather in several ways. First, it produces enough upward lift for the air to give way to the strong, irregular winds in the air. Unfortunately, this does not signal the final day of Balloon Fiesta. It also draws cold air from the Rocky Mountains into our state.
