Kansas City, Missouri — For the first time since the beginning of the pandemic, people relying on Thanksgiving meals were able to sit and dine in the Nourish KC dining room.
Nourish KC’s Kansas City Community Kitchen Dining Room reopened on Thursday with 50% capacity.
Sue Fenske, Executive Director of Nourish KC, said: “I felt that there were fewer new cases because there were enough people vaccinated. It felt like it was time to reopen the cafeteria because of the cold weather.”
Byron Smith is one of those who enjoyed the Nourish KC Thanksgiving meal. Smith says he needed food after an injury at work made him financially retreat.
“I volunteered a few years ago and I find it great for the community because I had to use their services for the first time. The friendships of the people I met while I was waiting. Was fun, so today is a great day and there are many things to thank, “Smith said.
According to Fenceke, the dining room was reopened, but the food was still prepared and delivered to those in need. Nourish KC They say they are working to “bring food security and systematic change to emergency food services in Greater Kansas City.”
Nicole King has been volunteering at Nourish KC for three months and says their job is to fill their stomachs and hearts with love.
“Looking around the community, there are always people and ways to give back to the community in these small ways and opportunities,” says King.
