Portland, Oregon (KOIN) —The Portland Police Department states that the number of fatal road accidents in Rose City increased “on alert” in 2021. Authorities say the number may be on track beyond 2020.
Police reviewed some numbers after investigating a fatal hit-and-run accident in Southeast Portland on Thursday. The victim was killed near Southeast McLaughlin Boulevard just before 10 am. The suspect was portrayed as a shirtless man with long hair on bread above his head.
So far, there have been 45 fatal crashes in Portland in 2021. In early September 2020, there were about 34 fatal crashes. In 2020, a total of 54 fatal crashes occurred in Portland.
Sgt. Kevin Allen of the Portland Police Department said the community needs to be aware of trends when on the road. He said the numbers could increase further in the coming months, with darker and rainier weather just around the corner.
“When we fall, people may drive more at night. There is rain and other weather, which also affects their ability to see, so be really careful while driving. There is an urgent need to pay attention to where we are heading and what is in front of us, “he said.
Allen said visibility plays a major role in road safety. As an example, he said an accident occurred early Saturday morning when a person was attacked in the lane while wearing dark clothes. In that case, he said there was no charge.
Preliminary research has shown that the driver may not have been able to see the person. The investigation is still underway.
According to Allen, the Portland Police Department once had an entire team of road safety officers who couldn’t do that due to a staffing crisis. He said the team is now tasked with answering 911 calls instead.
