Las Vegas (KLAS) — A text message alert sent by NV Energy today asks customers to save energy between 5 pm and 8 pm today and Thursday.

Excessive heat warnings are currently being issued in the Las Vegas Valley and surrounding areas. This is just one of the larger heat waves that hit the western United States.The heat alert was extended early this morning until Thursday 9 pm

NV Energy is asking customers to save energy to offset the energy supply problems caused by excessive heat in the western United States.

Nevada and California are currently in high demand.

Some Tips for Home Customers:

  • Turn off unnecessary lights
  • Turn off the pool pump
  • Unplug unused appliances
  • Avoid using large appliances such as dishwashers, washing machines and electric clothes dryers
  • Adjust the thermostat to 78 degrees or higher to reduce air conditioning usage during this period (unless there is a medical problem) and use a ceiling fan to cool people and pets.Precool the house before 5 pm
  • Keep the refrigerator and freezer closed as much as possible
  • Close the window cover to block heat
  • Do not charge the electric vehicle between 5 pm and 8 pm
