Today, July 30, 2021, the Auckland-Alameda County Coliseum Authority (“OACCA”) Board approves a term sheet with the African-American Sports Entertainment Group (“AASEG”) and the Women’s National Basketball Association (“OACCA”). WNBA “) was unanimously approved to form. Team to Auckland. As a champion and strong supporter of this effort, I would like to express my gratitude. We are excited about this unanimous vote to go through the process with AASEG and take the WNBA team to Auckland. This opens up opportunities to bring work, tax revenue, revitalization, and community involvement to East Auckland and our entire community.
The vote will take place after Henry Gardner, OACCA’s Executive Director, plans to report to the Auckland City Council on the status of OACCA’s term sheet negotiations with AASEG. On July 26, 2021, the Auckland City Council resolved to unanimously approve the process.
AASEG is an Auckland-based group focused on creating economic opportunities for the black community in East Auckland and using the Coliseum Complex as a means of economic equity and social justice. The group’s proposal to bring the WNBA team to the city of Auckland supports and supports women, expands the fairness of the African-American community, and allows fans to support sports primarily led by black women. It is in line with the city’s values. With the strong support of the Auckland City Council and OACCA, AASEG will continue its meeting with the WNBA and take the team to Auckland.#WEGOTNEXT!
