OCA Secured High Profit for Organic Farmers in 2020 Farm Program

Organic Cotton Accelerator increased the net profits of organic farmers in its farm program for the third consecutive year in 2020 compared to traditional peers in the same region. A premium of over € 1 million was paid directly to the farmers in addition to the market. The price clearly shows that there is a business case of organic cotton farming.

One of the main successes of OCA’s farm program is that up to 95% of the lint produced was procured by participating brands and retailers, OCA said in its 2020 annual report.

The OCA Seeds and Innovation Program, which saw the creation of OCA’s non-GM cotton seed production guidelines, was also successful. The guidelines are now available to all seed growers who want to prevent the presence of GMOs in seed lots and allow seed growers around the world to improve the integrity of the entire organic cotton value chain.

The proficiency test, launched by partners in 2020 to identify laboratories that can perform GMO tests against international ISO reference protocols, was another revolutionary milestone. The results of this proficiency test were shared this year. OCA’s contribution to this GMO test protocol supports efforts to ensure the integrity of the organic cotton sector as the protocol is now being converted to international standards, the report said.

Overall, the difficult situation in 2020 brought about by COVID-19 further highlighted the importance of cooperation needed by the entire organic cotton supply chain to protect farmers’ livelihoods.

“Farmers may face challenges over the coming months, but we are agile, in new ways of working to protect their lives and fulfill our mission even in difficult situations. I’ve proved that I can adapt. ” Keith Tyrell, Chair, OCA Board.

According to the OCA’s report, as demand for organic cotton continues to grow globally, continued growth and investment in farm-centric programs will benefit all participants while at the same time the sector You can create sustainable conditions for prosperity.
