Officials say Tucson is prepared for drought and water shortages – Tucson, Arizona

Tucson, Arizona (KGUN) —This week, the Colorado River was the first to declare a Tier 1 water shortage. Water cuts have been triggered in the southwest. long time no see.

“We have been hit by a drought on the Colorado River for 20 years,” said John Kmiek, Interim Director of Tucson Water. “A significant decline began to be seen in the late 2000s.”

Kmiec says it has been raining for several years and the recent inundation of this monsoon was not enough to avoid Tier 1 water shortages.

“When we talk about the Colorado River, it doesn’t matter how much it rains in Tucson. It’s important how much it snows in Colorado. That’s what determines the river, Lake Powell, and ultimately Lake Mead. “

Farmers and ranchers in Pinal County will suffer the greatest reductions, but the city of Tucson will continue to allocate water for the Colorado River in the same way until a Tier 3 shortage is declared. According to Kmiec, Tucson is one of the most prepared cities in the west and has been storing groundwater for decades thanks to the water banking system.

“Two-thirds of the annual water supply of the CAP (Central Arizona Project) is used each year,” he said. “That means about one-third of the annual quota goes into the aquifer for future Tucsonan use.

Unfortunately, despite groundwater reserves, our area is unaffected by higher water tariffs. If the drought continues, the cost of water on the Colorado River can rise over time.

“Tucson has enough water to thrive in the future, but not enough to waste.”

Kmiec states that water conservation will continue to be an important issue.

“Most people have adapted to desert landscaping and low-water use plants, which is what we continue to encourage.”
