Olmsted Falls, Ohio (AP / WJW) – Katie Nageotte wins unexpectedly U.S. gold In the Olympic pole vault ahead of Russian world champion Anzhelika Sidorova.
NS Olmsted Falls’ Native Nagiotte failed in the first two attempts of the competition at 4.50 meters, but improved from there and won her first major medal.
30 years old attended Olmsted Falls High School and Ashland University..
Sidorova took the silver at 4.85. The Holly Bradshaw in the UK won the bronze medal.
Nagiotte cleared 4.90 in his third attempt at the medal-winning round. Sidrowa passed the last chance at 4.90 and moved the bar to 4.95, but couldn’t clear it.
Sidrowa’s silver medal was the first Russian team’s athletics medal at the Tokyo Olympics. The Russian team is competing in the name of the Russian Olympic Committee as a result of the country’s long-running doping scandal.
