Portage County, Ohio (WJW) — Portage County Sheriff’s Office Warned parents about internet scams targeting teens and their bank accounts.
In what authorities call a “sugar daddy or sugar mamma” scam, scammers use Snapchat to contact teenagers, send good morning and good night messages, and ask them to pay attention. In exchange, the scammers pay them.
When a scammer sends a large check worth thousands of dollars, he asks the teenager to return some of the money or send it to the scammer’s “children.”
The scammer then obtains the teenager’s bank account information and empties the account.
The Portage County Sheriff’s Office educates children about the scam and warns parents not to talk to strangers they meet on the Internet.
