Tulsa, Oklahoma is trying to help the people of Oklahoma. Disability..

Currently, there are thousands of names on the waiting list, so it can take up to 13 years to connect to a state developmental disability service.

Parliamentarians and DHS representatives say they are working hard to provide better service to residents with developmental disabilities. The list of people waiting for these services has nearly 6,000 names. Eight-year-old Brooks Hobbes is one of them.

“When he was born, we knew something was wrong,” said Brooke’s father, Chris Hobbes.

After a year and a half of medical examination, the Hobbes family was finally diagnosed.

“CMV, cytomegalovirus. It was an infection during pregnancy. It’s actually very common,” Hobbes said.

Brooks is currently co-existing with this preventable and deadly virus.

“He is deaf in both ears. He has cochlear implants on both sides. He has mild CP, cerebral palsy. He has thyroid problems and white matter brain damage. Hobbes explained. “To get him on the list, we’re looking for something just around the corner.”

Two years ago, Hobbes signed his son on a waiting list for state-funded services for people with disabilities to help the state fund it. We are also waiting for your family.

“We’re servicing people and providing the services they need to maintain their quality of life, so please remove the list. That’s the goal, not just the name. “Oklahoma Senator Paul Rosino said.

Rosino is Vice Chairman of the Oklahoma Senate Health and Welfare Committee. He has helped DHS hire third-party companies to connect waiting families to resources. We also evaluate the cost of completely eliminating the waiting list.

“If we succeed in eliminating the waiting list, Oklahoma will be considered an exemplary state,” said Samantha Galloway, chief of staff and operations at Human Services in Oklahoma.

The waiting list for developmental disabilities in Oklahoma is decades old. Leaders hope to get rid of it within a few years.
