Oklahoma City (AP) — Oklahoma House approved a bill on Tuesday allowing the governor to fill vacant seats in the US Senate.

The bill, approved with 54-42 votes, is currently being deliberated in the Senate.

Under current Oklahoma law, if there is a vacancy in the US Senate, the governor will require a special election, but House author Kyle Hilbert says the process takes too long.

under His suggestionThe Governor selects a US Senator from a list of three names submitted by a speaker of the Oklahoma House of Representatives. The person elected is from the same political party as his predecessor and must be confirmed by the state legislature.

Rep. Andy Fagate voted against the bill, claiming to return Oklahoma to a “smoke-filled room of the last century.”

“This excludes people,” said Fugate of D-Midwest City. “It will be the promise of someone’s back room.”
