Tulsa, Oklahoma — 81-year-old Mike Tameny spends his life.

He taught and taught high school basketball for 41 years. But these players are challenging his coaching skills, he says.

“This group is a unique group of women,” Tameny said with a laugh.

And he wouldn’t have it the other way around.

“What I was used to in high school was quickness, jumping ability, and eye-hand coordination,” Tameny said. “But they are limited here.”

Limited for this team, Tulsa hot shotIs part of the National Women’s League and is made up of older women aged 50-80.

“The majority of them have never played basketball before,” Tameny said.

Cheryl Stone played as a kid and when she was in the Air Force. She admits that returning to court was not the easiest thing she did. “I started with something a little creepy, as most of us did,” Stone said. “But we are really in good shape and we are all feeling better.”

But it’s friendship, exercise, and competition that takes Stone and her teammates to the Hickspark Community Center for practice twice a week. And in a 3v3 half-court game, everyone stays in shape or gets in shape.

All of that is under the watchful eye of Tameny, who says everyone forgets how old they are when concentrating on the ball.

“Nothing hurts when I’m here,” Tameny said. “Things hurt when I’m on the answering machine!”

Three pointers and slam dunks are not displayed. Instead, Tameny says these women have their own style.

“Most of them shoot great old two-handed styles,” he said.

And where they are in the zone, they can drop more than a few baskets. He needs more players. So he’s calling.

“Anyone who is considering participating is encouraged to participate,” Tameny said. “No skills required.”

“I’m preparing to go to Fort Lauderdale for the national tournament in May, so I want more people,” Stone said.

Mike Brooks of KJRH first reported this story.
