Stillwater, Oklahoma — Jalen Warren dropped three tackles to punch in an 11-yard touchdown run and insured Oklahoma enough to defeat Tulsa 28-23 on Saturday.
The Cowboys dragged 14-7 into the fourth quarter, but dominated non-conference games with Spencer Sanders’ touchdown throw, LD Brown’s 98-yard kick-off return, and Warren’s Leitlan.
Tulsa, who fell to UC Davis in the FCS program last week, defeated Oklahoma for the first time since 1998 and appeared ready to win his first match at Stillwater since 1951.
The Golden Hurricane forced a 7-7 tie in half-time, and Justin Wright’s 55-yard intercept return contributed to the touchdown in the second half of the second quarter.
Tulsa was unable to overcome the Cowboys’ fourth-quarter explosion, even after adding a 3:06 touchdown. OSU recovered the onside kick and ran out of clock.
Similar to last Saturday’s narrow victory over Missouri, the Oklahoma attack struggled to find a foothold despite the return of the first quarterback to the lineup.
The match on Saturday marked the return of Sanders, who missed the opening round of the team. He finished in 173 passyards with 15-of-26 passes to go with two touchdowns and intercepts.
The first touchdown of Sanders went to Jayden Bray. Jayden Bray led Oklahoma with 84 yards in four catches, including the first touchdown grab in his college career. The other touchdowns in Sanders went to Bryson Green.
Tulsa’s chances were delayed, but a long drive that ended in a 20-yard field goal wasn’t available, overturning a slow fumble recovery after authorities reviewed the play.
Oklahoma State University attacks were frequent for two consecutive weeks, but their defenses continued to provide a safety net.
Tulsa will visit Ohio State University for the first time on Saturday after losing to The Birth of the Birth 48-3 on September 10, 2016.
Oklahoma will play the first road game of the season on a trip to Boise on Saturday.
