Broken Arrow, Oklahoma — The heat waves in Oklahoma make life uncomfortable for many families, but keeping cool can be important for people with chronic health problems.

When the air conditioner went off for an elderly couple in Broken Arrow and the Rent Guarantee felt stuck in repairs, they turned to 2 News Oklahoma Problem Solvers for help.

They knew they could be in trouble when the scorching, stuffy summer heat of August began to permeate the Broken Arrow Ward’s home.

“Precious lives are at stake,” said Judy Ward.

Judy has diabetes and other health problems, but her husband, Ronnie, suffered the most after the air conditioner broke down in early August.

“He’s having a hard time breathing anyway,” Judy said.

Ronnie has been hospitalized nine times in the last few years, fighting lung and heart problems, and is receiving breathing therapy twice daily, they said. Sometimes Ronnie just has a hard time talking.

“I know it could have been difficult, especially when you were hot,” Ronnie said. “I think others do too. I have COPD and other problems and have survived a heart attack.”

All the contractors in their network were busy during the heat wave when they called their home guarantee company to make A / C work. Ward said the service call could take at least two weeks or more.

“It’s too long to wait. We can’t afford to go to the hotel,” Judy said.

Ward said that some window units and fans had barely tolerated their homes. In an attempt to speed things up, they sent a letter from Ronnie’s doctor to American Home Assurance saying he couldn’t stand the heat. The AHS then allowed Ward to find its own independent contractor to diagnose the problem. The contractor has informed the guarantor that the entire system needs to be replaced.

“It didn’t go anywhere, now they want a second opinion by their people, but they still have no one to come out.” Judy called AHS daily and I was told that I had to wait for one of the contractors, even after more than three weeks.

Last summer, the company patched AC three times, each time Judy said it would stop working. “They support what they say and I believe they need to be fixed or replaced.”

At her wit end, Judy finally called for two news Oklahoma problem solvers.

“For Ronnie, at least I thought I’d do it. Despite being my husband, I’m a kind of mama bear. Over the last few years, we’ve experienced a lot.”

After hearing the story of Judy and Ronnie, 2 News Oklahoma Problem Solver contacted American Home Shield. The good news immediately followed when the supervisor called Ward.

“She explained that they were going to do everything they could to get it right, and they did,” Ronnie said.

American Home Shield has installed a new air conditioner and kamado.

“God has blessed us so much. We are now relieved and comforted in our own home,” Judy said.

In addition to paying the $ 7,000 installation fee, American Home Shield also offered to refund the window unit and service fees paid to Ward. Judy and Ronnie say they couldn’t be happier because they could focus on their health rather than the heat.
