New Orleans, Louisiana 2021-12-01 17:51:00 –
According to the sheriff’s office, a dump truck driver died after an Amtrak train crashed in the Parish of Tangipahoa.
Train passengers have not been reported injured.
The crash occurred near Ponder’s Quarters Lane, a small road away from US Route 51, approximately halfway between Independence and Amite.
By 2016, Amtrak’s Ponder’s Quarters Crossing had no intersection gates or lights. The latest photo of a Google Maps intersection, also taken five years ago, warns that there are no gates or lights at the intersection.
An action plan prepared by the Federal Railroad Administration and adopted by Louisiana in 2011 states that 60% of public cross-collisions occurred in 14 parishes, including Tangipahoa.
This is a developing story.
