A gunman opened fire at a dental clinic in El Cajon on Thursday afternoon, killing one person and injuring two others, authorities said. The suspect was taken into custody Thursday night following a search.
The El Cajon Police Department reported in a social media post that the suspect is 29-year-old Mohammed Abdulkareem. was running away He was driving a white U-Haul pickup truck with Arizona license plates. Just after 10pm local time, police reported that he had been arrested. Details about his arrest were not immediately released.
One victim, a man, died at the scene of the shooting, El Cajon Police Lt. Rob Ransweiler said at a news conference Thursday evening prior to the arrest. His name has not been released. The other two people were taken to area hospitals with gunshot wounds and are expected to survive.
A motive was not disclosed, and police did not elaborate on the circumstances that led to the incident.
Landsweiler said the suspect was in possession of a handgun, adding that “there were other people in the office” at the time of the shooting.
Ransweiler said investigators used city surveillance cameras to help identify the suspect.
“We were able to obtain license plate information from the flock camera system when the vehicle left the area,” Ransweiler explained. “So we never saw the suspect at the scene and… using that technology we were able to identify the vehicle and confirm that it was rented by the suspect. Ta.”
El Cajon is located approximately 24 miles east of San Diego.
