This award and scholarship is given annually to students who are qualified in the fields of human rights law and theory, offered as part of the undergraduate program at Jindal Global Law School.
The award is announced on March 9th each year to coincide with the anniversary of Sorabji’s birth. The award shall carry the scholarship along with the award medal.
Soli Sorabjee is an advocate of freedom of speech and expression, and has defended the right to freedom of speech and expression in many groundbreaking cases, including the Kesavananda Balti and SR Bonmai cases in the Supreme Court of India. For Solabsey, human rights are the conscience of the Constitution and the guardian of that conscience, an independent judicial independence.
Therefore, scholarships and awards are reminiscent of Sori Solabsey’s achievements and his contributions to all forms of human rights protection, as well as areas of close interest in Solabsey.
The Soli J Sorabjee Endowment Award and Scholarship was founded by a generous donation personally established by senior advocate Satvik Varma and will be offered for 20 years.

Soli J. Sorabjee was born in Bombay in 1930. He studied at St. The Birds University in Mumbai and Government Law College in Mumbai and entered the bar in 1953. The Government Law College was awarded the Kinlock Forbes Gold Medal of Roman Law and Law (1952).
In 1971, Solabsey was appointed Senior Lawyer of the Bombay High Court. He was the Under Secretary of Justice for India from 1977 to 1980. He was appointed Attorney General of India from December 9, 1989 to December 2, 1990, and then again on April 7, 1998.
In March 2002, Soli Sorabjee was awarded the Padmavi Boushan for advocating for freedom of expression and protection of human rights. Throughout his career, Sori has been passionate about public and international law, especially with regard to the protection and promotion of human rights. Soli Sorabjee has been appointed by the United Nations as a Special Rapporteur in Nigeria.
Then, from 1998 to 2004, he was appointed chairman of the United Nations Subcommittee on the Promotion and Protection of Human Rights. Since 1998, he has also been a member of the United Nations Subcommittee on the Prevention of Discrimination and the Protection of Minorities.
Soli Sorabjee was also a member of the Permanent Court of Arbitration in The Hague. On behalf of India, Solabsey appeared in an international court in an Atlantic case between India and Pakistan.
