Pueblo County — Two schools in Pueblo County have shown that it costs money to read. The Pueblo Library District honored South Mesa Elementary School at a rally on Monday after 100% of the school’s 322 students participated in a $ 1 million summer reading challenge.

The John Neumann Catholic School in Pueblo was another school that clocked in with 100 percent participation.

During the summer, students in Pueblo County were asked to check out 10 items from any of the Pueblo libraries and answer the library district about what they read. If they are able to complete the challenge, they will receive $ 100.

“I read a lot of leadership books and learned how to become a leader, lead and stay positive,” said Skyler Snell, a student at South Mesa Elementary School.

In total, over 7,000 students received $ 100 from the program.

Funding comes from the Federal Stimulation Fund distributed to Pueblo City and Pueblo County through the American Rescue Planning Act (ARPA).

John Walker, managing director of the Pueblo Library District, said the summer reading program would prevent loss of learning during the school year.

“We know that this special turmoil that happened last year has doubled it in a way,” he explained. “You had some kind of confusing grade, some of the kids couldn’t get their full educational interaction, and then the idea went well, they were even more in the summer. Will have. ”

Prior to the challenge, the library district had already handed out $ 350,000 worth of certificates to bring the children to the bank to earn cash rewards.

According to Walker, many students chose to pay for college savings.
