Most of the Memorial Day weekend was washed away, but with Massachusetts reopening on Saturday, it was enjoyable indoors.
Sogas’ Roller Skating Link, Roller World, has opened at full capacity for the first time since the pandemic began.
For owner Jerry Breen, who has lost thousands of dollars in the last 16 months, it was a relief to be able to start a full business.
“It’s about time, isn’t it? It’s been a long time,” he said.
Breen says he was fortunate to have a borrower to help him float. He used to be able to open with 20% capacity, but he had to spend thousands of dollars on plexiglass and other safety devices, all of which will soon be over.
“Fortunately, the building had a tenant who would pay some bills,” Breen said.
Kathy Benuti of East Boston was one of the many excited participants this weekend.
“We’re happy to be around people and see everyone’s faces,” she said. “It’s just wonderful. We feel alive again and we’re so happy to be here I’m glad.”
However, some said they were not yet accustomed to the new update of the public guidelines, where masks are an option for fully vaccinated residents.
“To be honest, it’s a bit annoying because I don’t know when to put on or take off the mask,” said Near Howard of Jamaica Plain.
For others, removing the mask was an easy solution.
“Now you can wear your glasses without clouding,” said Ashley Vaccaro of Salem.
