Overland Park, Kansas (KCTV)-The Overland Park area is concerned about the growing popularity of short-term rentals.
That new concern arose after a shooting on Saturday at a party in a house on 151st Avenue rented out through a popular app.
Currently, police are still investigating exactly what happened.
They know that bullets were fired both inside the house and on the street. They found blood in the house, but there were no victims of the shooting.
But neighbors are still upset because it could have gotten much worse.
Around 11:00 pm on Saturday, people in normally calm areas were terrified.
“I was watching TV around 11 o’clock, and it goes,’Bum, Bum, Bum, Bum, Bam, Bam!'” Reminded one neighbor. “We were asleep and just heard,’ta, ta, ta, ta, ta, ta, ta, ta.’ I thought it was a firecracker, but it was actually a rapid shooting. “
The shooting started at home and continued down the street to the corner.
“I was even afraid to see and see what was happening. I was afraid to be shot,” said the neighbor. “So I got up right away and left the front door, and there were people scrambling, kids scrambling everywhere.”
The house where it started was hosting a party. It is often rented only on weekends.
“There are people who come and go there all the time,” said the neighbor.
At least two other short-term rental housing in the same block.
“I thought the entire area was classified as a” single-family home. ” I was really surprised when all this started to happen, “said the neighbor.
Many neighbors don’t like it. Frequent crowds and late-night noise are problems.
One neighbor said, “So it’s destructive. But again, when the shoot takes place, it’s a whole new level. Of course, it’s unacceptable.”
City council member Dr. Faris Farassati agrees. It is unacceptable.
“And that could be a danger signal for us, which means we need to investigate the situation with better due diligence in order to better protect our neighborhood,” he said.
Houses like this one are operated under a short-term rental license that can be revoked if the city determines that there are too many code violations.
Therefore, he recommends that concerned neighbors report problems to police and city law enforcement agencies.
“At least in my eyes, I can’t make more money than the peace, tranquility and quality of life of my neighborhood,” he said.
The homeowner put the KCTV5 inside and checked for damage, but didn’t want to interview.
