Panama City, FL –
SPRINGFIELD, Fla. (WMBB) – Bay County officials have charged more students they say were involved in the riot Monday morning at Rutherford High School. According to the authorities, a total of 16 arrests have been made.
School district officials expect some of the arrested students to be kicked out of Rutherford High School.
“I am more concerned that we are seeing an escalation of these events. And it’s just not in school. We’ve had fights at the rinks, we’ve had fights at football games, we’ve had fights at the mall, ”said Rutherford High School principal Coy Pilson.
Bay County Sheriff Tommy Ford said law enforcement arrived at around 50 students fighting. Some students are charged with criminal offenses.
“We think it was, that it was gang related. You know it was a conflict between two different gang members. And it’s just not something we’re going to have a tolerance for, ”Sheriff Tommy Ford said.
As school officials say brawls are on the rise… Superintendent Bill Husfelt says there is little the district can do to stop them.
“Social media is the defining factor in most of our business. Because they want to have a video, they want to broadcast it, they want to do something that was challenged there. We also know that some of these things are gang related, so you take all of these things together and there is nothing we can do to stop it, ”Husfelt said.
As the fight unfolded in the yard, there was a separate report of a college girl with a gun. It turned out to be a pellet gun that was found by law enforcement.
“It could have been really scary. And even with the separate incident with the pellet gun, if this young woman had drawn that gun, I’m afraid what would have happened, ”Pilson said.
Pilson also says there was a regular presence throughout Rutherford today.
