Panama City, FL –
LOS ANGELES (KTLA– Two women were arrested last month after a botched Brazilian butt lift performed at a private home in Encino resulted in the death of an aspiring social media star, police said.
Karissa Rajpa was undergoing her third such procedure last September, when she died of acute respiratory failure from dangerous silicone injections, the Los Angeles Police Department told KTLA on Monday.
Detectives say the two women arrested in the case, Libby Adame and her daughter Alicia Gomez, may have committed these alleged crimes outside the network for years due to social media.
“They pose as if they had the skills or expertise to perform surgeries on the human body and they don’t,” said Deputy Chief Alan Hamilton of LAPD.
After the mother-daughter duo injected Rajpa, she had complications. They called 911 and then let her die, Hamilton said.
“They took people’s money and we know in a few incidents it resulted in murder,” Hamilton said.
Adame and Gomez have both been charged with the operation.
According to detectives, there could be dozens if not hundreds of additional victims at the hands of the same two women.
“Some of these victims may not have survived these procedures and that is what we are looking at now,” Hamilton said.
Rajpa moved to California from South Africa in hopes of becoming a star. But instead, detectives said she was preyed and killed.
“I was completely terrified,” said Dr. AJ Khalil, a board surgeon. “I mean it’s a nightmare come true. … It’s dangerous, it’s illegal and these people are going to have to face the consequences. They killed a patient.
The surgeon added that unfortunately this happens a lot.
“It’s done by untrained people who inject silicone grade products from Home Depot or Lowe’s, any type of compound,” Khalil said.
And this is a popular procedure. In fact, the Brazilian butt lift has climbed 77% in the United States in recent years.
The two women are running an all-cash operation, LAPD said, adding that they had found evidence that these procedures were also conducted in Las Vegas, and possibly overseas, for potentially more than a decade.
The LAPD wishes to hear from victims or family members who have lost a loved one as a result of such proceedings.
