Panama City, FL –
BAY COUNTY Fla. (WMBB) – If there was any doubt that COVID-19 was a local threat again, you should be concerned about the latest statistics from the health department.
COVID-19 cases have nearly doubled in Bay County in the past seven days. Hospitals in the region also say they have admitted more patients with the deadly virus.
According to the Florida Department of Health, 1,007 people have tested positive for COVID-19 in Bay County since July 16. This represents an average of 143 new positive cases per day.
Ascension Sacred Heart Bay chief medical officer Dr Amer Malik said he has noticed an increase in cases and an increase in hospitalizations, due to the highly transmissible delta variant.
Publication of a statement saying:
“The increase in COVID-19 cases as a result of the delta variant is an issue we are monitoring closely. The health and safety of our associates, patients and this community remains our top priority, and we are ready and able to provide personalized and compassionate care to everyone who walks through our doors. Recently, we have seen a noticeable and worrying increase in the number of patients requiring hospitalization for COVID-19. Although we cannot speak about the condition of these patients, we can say that the majority of these patients are not vaccinated. We cannot stress enough the importance of getting the vaccine and encouraging your loved ones to get the vaccine as well. Approved vaccines are safe and effective, and the benefits of being vaccinated outweigh any identified risks or side effects. “
In Jackson County, Jackson Hospital vice president of public relations Amy Milton said they are currently treating 17 patients for the virus – only one was fully vaccinated.
Data shows that these numbers have grown rapidly over the past 10 weeks.
During the first week of July, approximately 23,000 people in the state of Florida tested positive for the virus. This week, that number has risen to over 73,000, an increase of over 200%.
Reports on Friday show that only 42% of Bay County’s population is fully vaccinated.
The Florida Department of Health publishes this information every Friday.
