JACKSON COUNTY, FL (WMBB) – A festival was held at Two Egg on Saturday to commemorate the anniversary of the liberation of Florida slaves.
The Northwest Florida Emancipation Day Festival hosted the event regarding May 20, 1865 or May 1 in Florida.
Members of the Jackson County community celebrated the historic day with vendors, live music and lots of food.
Founder and chairman of the Emancipation Day Festival of Northwest Florida and children’s book author Byron Dickens said he was almost to tears to see so many people showing up to celebrate an important day in American history.
“So it’s my core belief that America is not America without emancipation… You know, the freedoms and freedoms that we so honor and love and that we market to the world,” Dickens said. . “So this is a great opportunity… I’m so blessed to see so many people coming forward. “
Dickens also said the festival was an early celebration of Juneteenth, which is a national celebration of slave freedom in the United States.
