Panama City, FL –
FRANKLIN COUNTY, Florida (WMBB) – George E. Weems Memorial Hospital in Franklin County receives national recognition for the telehealth program it provides to the community.
“You know the small rural health communities, we are important and we try to do everything we can to help the people in our community,” said David Walker, CEO of Weems Memorial Hospital.
Walker said people were afraid to come to hospital during the pandemic and telehealth services allowed them to receive medical care from the comfort of their own homes.
Weems is one of three rural hospitals in the United States to be recognized for their telehealth services.
Walker said being in a rural community made it difficult for people in the community to access specialists. Telehealth services allow people to meet specialists without having to drive hours in another city.
The hospital has special telehealth equipment and has set up a room for people to meet specialists by computer in privacy.
“We really want to be a leader for small rural hospitals, especially critical access hospitals,” Walker said.
