Panama City, FL –
PANAMA CITY Fla. (WMBB) – Governor Ron DeSantis visited Panama City on Wednesday and spoke a few words of choice for the Biden administration and its handling of the covid outbreak.
Much of it centered around the debate over the mandate of “masks in schools”. Governor DeSantis said masks in Florida schools are not being considered.
“He wants the government to force kindergartens to wear masks in schools,” DeSantis said. “He doesn’t think parents should have a say, he thinks it should be a government decision. Well, I can tell you that in Florida the parents will be the only ones responsible for this decision.
DeSantis’ remarks drew a big reaction from the crowd of local politicians and business owners.
He then attacked the Biden administration’s response to the latest wave of COVID-19.
“Joe Biden suggests that if you don’t enforce foreclosure policies you should ‘get out of the way,’ but let me tell you this,” DeSantis said. “If you oppose parental rights in Florida, I’ll bar you. “
DeSantis said restricting people would ruin their livelihoods and denying children an in-person education would be unfair.
Bay District Schools Superintendent Bill Husfelt said he sees concerns from all sides but believes returning children to class is the best option at the moment.
“I understand that,” said Husfelt. “Our children are better off and safer at school than at home. The studies we have seen have proven that.
Husfelt’s friend and local doctor, Dr Frank Merritt, disagreed. Citing the fact that Florida has broken records for the number of daily cases over the past week.
“I’m for delaying school for two weeks,” Merritt said. “There is no need to add kerosene or gas to the fire.”
Governor DeSantis has said he will not let the federal government “get away” by locking down the country, and he will stick to it.
“I can tell you Florida, we are a free state,” DeSantis said. “People will be free to choose to make their own decisions. “
The governor said he agreed with the blockages and the requirement for people to get vaccinated.
He said it should be up to parents to decide whether their children wear masks, and he will continue to fight the federal government on this issue.
