Panama City, FL –
BAY COUNTY, Fla. (WMBB) – Officials at Gulf Coast State College are trying to make college possible for every senior graduate this year.
The college’s foundation is launching a new program, offering immediate scholarships to all seniors in Bay, Gulf and Franklin counties.
The “Gulf Coast Guarantee” is intended for students from these three counties, who enroll in Gulf Coast State College and maintain a GPA of 2.0. They will receive $ 1,400 per year to go to school, or $ 700 per semester.
It is designed to attract students who think university is inaccessible due to tuition fees.
“To know that our children who might not otherwise see hope now have hope,” said Jim Norton, Principal of Gulf County Schools. “All the kids in Gulf, Bay and Franklin counties who graduate will have the chance to go to college, I mean it’s great.”
Any public, private or homeschooled 2021 senior citizen is eligible.
There is no application process, all these students need to do is register for 12 credit hours per semester.
“Our students deserve it, they deserve an opportunity they may not have had before. I can’t wait to see the changes and see how many students they will have. It’s very exciting for this school district and for this region. We appreciate the opportunity to be a part of it. Franklin County Schools Superintendent Steve Lanier said.
This is expected to increase college enrollment by 30% over the next five years.
Local businessman Bill Cramer has been a founding member of the college for decades.
He chairs the Gulf Coast Guarantee scholarship effort and kicked off the campaign with a donation of $ 100,000.
“I think education is the best investment you can make in a community. It improves people’s lives, changes their lives, gives them opportunities that they wouldn’t otherwise have. Forms them for jobs that are needed in the community, helps attract businesses because we can do the training to meet their specific needs. Cramer said.
“Employers who come to the area are trying to figure out where their skilled workforce will come from. We are also going to be able to attract more industries and businesses to Gulf and Franklin counties because we are going to have a workforce there, ”said GCSC President, the Dr John Holdnak.
This opportunity will begin this fall for students in Bay, Gulf and Franklin counties. The “Guarantee” is in addition to any existing scholarships that students may have.
