PANAMA CITY, Florida (WMBB) – Some local preschools are helping children in need this holiday season.

Young students at Palm Bay Elementary collect new pajamas to donate to Anchorage Children’s Home. It is a project that teaches students to give back to the community.

“It would do me good because if I helped someone, maybe we would be friends,” Kindergarten student Kaylee Manning said.

Kindergarten aims to collect 300 pajamas. Anyone can help by bringing new pajamas of all sizes to Palm Bay Elementary, located at 1104 Balboa Ave. They are collecting donations for Anchorage Children’s Home until Friday, December 10.

Anchorage Children’s Home provides resources for families and a safe place for children in the community. Palm Bay Elementary School principal Patty Phillips said the kindergarten children’s efforts to collect pajamas for the nonprofit were part of the school’s curriculum.

“We’re involved in project-based learning, which is lifelong teaching through a driving question,” Phillips said.

The driving question for students is “how can we help our community?” Kindergarten teacher Rhonda Richey said kindergarten kids took care of it afterwards. “We ask them the question and believe it or not, the students find the answers to the problem,” she said. “So when we say that the students came up with the idea of collecting pajamas, it was their idea.”

Richey said that from using her writing skills to publicize her efforts, to speaking in public when kindergarten students ask other classes to donate pajamas, the project is among theirs. daily lessons.

“And then it goes to math,” she said. “With us graphing the number of pajamas we have and putting it on a graph. “

All donations made go a long way to help children in need and show kindergarten children that their hard work is paying off.

“It will be a big deal for them that they could take the credit for it – that it was something that they were able to do on their own,” Richey said.

The class that collects the most pajamas will be treated to an evening of hot chocolate and cookies.
