ST. PETERSBURG, Florida (WFLA– A personalized prosthetic leg worth $ 15,000 was stolen from a man who was hit by a car and seriously injured in St. Petersburg on Monday evening, police said. The man’s family are now asking whoever has it to return the leg.
The accident happened around 10 p.m. on Monday. Police say Christopher Allen Harris, 49, was walking in a crosswalk when he was hit by an Infinity G35 driven by a 21-year-old man.
Harris suffered life-threatening injuries and was taken to Bayfront Health in critical condition.
Police said the impact of the crash knocked off Harris’ prosthetic leg. The leg then struck another vehicle heading east. A spokesperson for the police department said the two drivers have pulled over and are cooperating with the investigation.
Police said the prosthetic leg was stolen before police arrived at the scene. The leg is personalized with Marvel artwork and is worth $ 15,000.
“The victim’s family would like to get it back,” said Yolanda Fernandez of St. Pete Police. “We ask anyone with information about the prosthesis to bring it back to the police. “
Police said the crash investigation was still ongoing, but detectives don’t believe alcohol or drugs played a role.
