Panama City, FL –
PANAMA CITY BEACH, Florida (WMBB) — Panama City Beach draws people from all over for Memorial Day weekend.
So what do people do when the weather is bad in the week before the holidays?
“Everybody likes to eat when it’s raining, you know, nobody’s on the beach,” said Angry Tuna restaurant general manager James Koden. “You know, we’re lucky to be here. It’s a good place.
Koder said this week could have been a record week for sales at Angry Tuna — or at least close to it.
The seafood restaurant isn’t the only one seeing this pull, either.
The local clothing store, Coastal Casuals, also increased its sales.
“Just starting this week, looking at last year, it’s [sales] definitely increased a major difference,” said Coastal Casuals store manager Kylie Williamson. “And the best thing we’ve seen is that even though it’s stormy and it’s raining and it’s a bit gross outside, we still have people outside, so it’s definitely increased one ton.”
And now that the weather is starting to clear up just in time for the weekend, tourists can head back to the sun.
“Our plans are probably to do some jet skis and get on a banana boat,” said Tennessee tourist Carlos Pee. “Probably chill on the beach and go eat some crab legs if not today tomorrow. Have a few drinks or something, you know.
Business leaders like Kylie Williamson expect shopping crowds to dwindle as people like Carlos and his cousins enjoy beach activities.
But that doesn’t mean the rush is over.
Local business owners hope to stay busy at night when everyone is back from the beach for the day.
