Panama City, FL – New marine science building coming to North Bay Haven Charter Academy

Panama City, FL –

LYNN HAVEN, Fla. (WMBB) – Lynn Haven Town Commissioners approved the development order for a new marine science building at the North Bay Haven Charter Academy at a meeting last week.

A few months ago, the commissioners rejected the proposal for this new building, citing traffic problems on Highway 390.

North Bay Haven Director of Education Larry Bolinger resubmitted his municipal development permit application after stressing that the new building would not result in additional students and traffic.

Bolinger said he was happy the marine science program now has a permanent focus.

“We want them in a permanent building and if you look at the blueprints, they’ll be state of the art and we’ll just have a great marine science program there, right on the water,” Bolinger said.

Currently, marine science lessons are taught in these modular classrooms, but the moratorium on the temporary building ends in 2023.

Norma Kealy is a marine and environmental science teacher at North Bay Haven, who said the current setup is quite limited.

“It’s a small building we’re in and it’s really temporary,” Kealy said. “It’s hard to set up permanent projects when you’re in such a small space, so it will be really essential in taking this learning to the next level for kids. “

Kealy said the new classrooms would be of great benefit to the program and the students.

“The way our classrooms are set up, we can open the doors and immediately connect to the outdoors and we can spend more time on the water because we will come in and we will be able to afford the children to rinse off.” and change clothes, ”Kealy said.

Construction on the building is expected to begin in January and is expected to take nine months to a year.
