Panama City, FL –
TYNDALL AIRBASE, Fla. (WMBB) – One of the most recent military reconstruction projects at Tyndall Air Force Base is a new military accommodation facility.
Tyndall’s original base hotel, the “Sand Dollar Inn” was built in 1943. 75 years later Hurricane Michael destroyed it.
Tyndall’s accommodation manager Joe Moore said they would build a new military accommodation facility on the base.
“We are considering allowing them to come together in a nice new facility inside,” Moore said. “There will be a restaurant, there will be all the amenities you would need as a traveler.
This 360-room hotel will be used to accommodate military personnel temporarily staying in Tyndall and those staying long-term on a mission.
All bedrooms will be air conditioned and it will be a very modern space.
Rigoberto Perez with the 325th Support Squadron said this new facility will increase their capacity and support the work being done on the base.
“The mission behind Air Force Inns is to provide low cost proximity to the mission’s work area and also essentially accommodations that allow anyone who visits us comfortable accommodations away from home,” said Perez.
Before Hurricane Michael, Tyndall hosted around 11,000 guests a year. After the storm, they only worked with 33% of these rooms. The new installation should change that.
“I expect that we will increase somewhere in the neighborhood of 28,000 room nights, hotel nights when the new facility is built and we will be at about 85% occupancy year round,” Moore said. .
Tyndall is expected to inaugurate the building early next year and it will open at the end of 2024.
As for the name of the hotel, it will keep the name “The Sand Dollar Inn”.
