Panama City, FL – New York school district bans ‘Squid Game’ Halloween costumes

Panama City, FL –

FAYETTEVILLE, NY (NEXSTAR) – Halloween costumes are often all about the most talked about in the months leading up to the spooky vacation – which is why a New York school district is preemptively hijacking students from the Netflix hit “Squid Game.”

Principals of three elementary schools in the Fayetteville-Manlius district have emailed parents letting them know that dressing up as a character in the South Korean dystopian survival drama would not be allowed.

An email sent to parents at Mott Road Elementary School raised “concerns about the potentially violent nature of the game” and said “Squid Game” was “inappropriate for recess or discussion at school” , according to CNY Center.

The Netflix show depicts a group of South Korean residents battling it out in a children’s game series for the chance to get rid of crippling debt. Those who lose the games, however, are killed.

Schools superintendent Dr. Craig Tice told CNY Central in a statement that some school staff have seen students at recess imitate games on the show.

“Because of this activity, our principals wanted to make sure our families were aware that it would be inappropriate for a student to wear a Halloween costume from this show to school due to the potential violent messages lined up with the costume. “Tice wrote. “They also wanted families to know that some of our younger students are talking and imitating aspects of the performance / play at school so that parents and guardians have a chance to talk about it themselves with their children and reinforce the school’s message that games associated with violent behavior are not appropriate for recess.
