Panama City, FL –
BAY COUNTY, Fla. (WMBB) – Discussions about reopening Oscar Patterson Elementary School have gained momentum in recent months.
Magnet School was closed after Hurricane Michael due to population and class issues.
Now families can look forward to an official reopening date.
Oscar Patterson’s oversight committee has been working to reopen the school doors for a while and now it’s finally a reality.
With many area schools nearing capacity, school board leaders say it’s time to reopen Oscar Patterson.
New residential complexes are expected to arrive in the area in the coming years, helping to increase the school’s population.
The plan is to start in K-2 and increase by one grade level each year.
“They’re going to build a whole new STEM based half-cent sales tax-based building for 2020. We’re going to make sure we have an A plus STEM program.” said student lawyer Greg Dossie.
School leaders expect the school to be open to students in August 2022.
In addition to classes K through 2, there will also be 17 preschool classrooms occupying the campus.
