Panama City, FL – Port St. Joe receives $850K for environmental recovery

Panama City, FL –

NORTH PORT ST. JOE, Florida (WMBB) – North Port St. Joe officials said there has never been a thorough assessment of the area.

Thanks to the Environmental Protection Agency, or EPA, they now have $850,000 to conduct one.

EPA Regional Administrator Daniel Blackman presented the money to the Pioneer Bay Community Development Corporation Monday.

“We are very proud to know that this work will be transformative and will help the community so much,”

A huge problem that needs to be solved is the sinking of houses.

Officials said an underground stream ran through the area before becoming a landfill.

“Which was composed mainly of pine, straw, bark and wood. And now, over the years, the pine, the straw, the bark and the wood, and the underground stream, are sinking the houses because they rot and decay,” said the vice president of the North Port St. Joe Project Area Coalition, Dannie Bolden.

Dannie Bolden said he knows about 10 households affected by this, but they believe the problem is much bigger.

He said it is very likely that the water has spread to other areas as well.

They also want to study air quality.

“The St. Joe Paper Company basically dumped ash, it was found to have arsenic, there was cyanide found here that’s in the water table,” Bolden said.

Three grants will support this initiative.

A collaborative problem-solving grant will allow the community to come together and discuss their issues.

A job training grant will allow the community to participate in environmental cleanup and be paid to do so.

The last is the evaluation grant.

“I mean, we’ve been through a lot,” said Pioneer Bay Community Development Corporation executive director Akosua Duah. “We’ve come so far and I can’t believe it tonight. I’m so grateful.”

Officials hope to get to work in July.
