Panama City, FL – South Walton enters fall with competitive QB battle

Panama City, FL –

SANTA ROSA BEACH, Florida. (WMBB) – After a 2021 season of 10 first-round playoff victories, the South Walton football team is looking to raise the bar another notch.

Their first job this fall is to replace graduate quarterback Kemper Hodges, who was Class 4A Offensive Player of the Year.

“We have two guys fighting, Carson Hawk and Wells Bentonhausen,” South Walton head football coach Phil Tisa said. “Carson was our backup quarterback from last year, Wells is a newcomer who joined us in the spring. So they fight every day and hopefully one of them jumps up and takes that position. .

The Hawks return with a young but experienced roster with a physical front line.

Senior center Jack Painter said the offensive unit will be ready for whoever wins the quarterback battle.

“I think whatever we have to protect as best we can, whoever’s up there, whether it’s Carson or Wells, we just have to do our best to give them as much time as possible,” he said. said Painter.

Whoever leads the offense will have the most talented receiving options in the state at their disposal.

Rising senior and four-star commitment from the University of Georgia, Pearce Spurlin is coming off a junior season of 74 catches, 1,400 yards and 20 touchdowns.

Spurlin said there will be no drop in production on the pass attack.

“We lost Kemper but we have two very good quarterbacks, two very young quarterbacks here and they compete every day,” Spurlin said. “I think me and all the other guys on the team have faith in them to lead and step up and do what we need them to do.”

A concern for the Falcons to start the season, Spurlin will miss at least the regular season opener with a lingering injury.

“We’ve got it and we’ve got another receiver starting this second, but it forces the other guys to step up, and hopefully in the long run it makes us better because they’re getting reps that they don’t. ‘wouldn’t get normally,’ Tisa said.

South Walton was placed in a new district with three Bay County teams, Rutherford, Bay and North Bay Haven.

The Seahawks will open their regular season against powerhouse 1A Baker on Friday, August 26.
