Panama City, FL –
PANAMA CITY, Fla. (WMBB) — A jury on Thursday night acquitted a 22-year-old man facing a life sentence on a murder charge.
Prosecutors have charged Jorge Perez and four others with involvement in a December 2019 robbery that ended in the shooting death of Panama City Beach’s Ed Ross.
Perez spoke Thursday and said he was not involved in the crime, his phone was stolen by the other defendants and he was trying to turn his life around.
Prosecutors had argued that Perez staged the robbery because Ross was known to have a large amount of marijuana and cash in his home.
However, investigators said that while they believe Perez was there the night of the murder, there was no physical evidence linking him to the crime.
Perez was the second defendant to stand trial in the case.
Another jury found Abel Ortiz guilty of first degree murder in April.
