Panama City, FL –
Apalachicola, Fla., (The Apalachicola Times) – If you’ve seen a bear roaming the backyards of Apalachicola, your eyes aren’t fooling you.
The report of a sizable Florida black bear was first reported to the Apalachicola Police Department on Saturday afternoon, according to Chief Bobby Varnes, and since then there have been quite a few reports.
Varnes said Sunday morning the department received a call that the bear had been spotted along 11th and 12th streets near the Apalachicola Housing Authority.
Frank Hutchinson, who rents for a month in Apalachicola, said he saw him Sunday morning near 7th and 8th Street between Avenue B.
“He wasn’t big, but he wasn’t short either,” he said. “He passed by a cat but he didn’t want it. I don’t know what the cat thought.“
And then Hutchinson learned he was later spotted near Avenue D and 5th Street.
“Over the past few years we’ve had calls here and there, but it’s not too often that we get calls,” Varnes said. “We’ll go to the area and see if we can get him back into the woods.”
The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission is responsible for bear control. They advise people to keep their distance and make no effort to attract the bear, especially not with food.
Sheriff AJ Smith posted a Facebook Live video in which he said his office informed FWC about the bear and officers would not respond on Sunday. He urged locals to keep their distance and not feed the bear.
