Panthers coach Matt Rhule: No QB decision imminent – Baltimore, Maryland

Carolina Panthers head coach Matt Rule will have weeks to decide whether Sam Darnold or Baker Mayfield will take the snap against the Cleveland Browns in Week 1.

Rule told reporters Saturday that he will review the quarterback at least until after two joint practices with the Patriots and a preseason game against New England on Aug. 19 in Foxborough, Massachusetts. He said

But that doesn’t mean the rules promise to name the starter the next day.

After both quarterbacks attended scrimmage, the rule said on Saturday, “We don’t put a timetable in quarterback positions until we come back from Patriots week.” It’s litmus paper. It will really show us where we are.”

Apparently, neither Darnold nor Mayfield achieved separation on Saturday. Rule said he saw the positives from both quarterbacks at scrimmage, but he also remembered the negatives.

“What was disappointing was that each player had an interception,” Ruhl said. “We have to protect football.”

Darnold opened the 2021 season with the Panthers starting quarterback, looking for a fresh start after the New York Jets decided to part ways with him and traded him to the Panthers.

In 12 games (11 starts) in 2021, Darnold has a 4-7 record. He completed his 59.9% of his passes, gained 2,527 yards and had nine touchdowns and his 13 interceptions. He missed five games with a shoulder injury.

In four seasons with the Jets and Panthers, the 25-year-old Darnold went 17-32 as a starter, throwing for 10,624 yards with 54 touchdowns and 52 interceptions.

The 27-year-old Mayfield started 29-30 for the Browns and finished 61.6% for 14,125 yards, 92 touchdowns and 56 interceptions in his four seasons with Cleveland.

In an injury-plagued 2021 season, Mayfield went 6-8 in 14 games. His 3,010 yards and his 17 touchdowns were career-lows. He also threw 13 interceptions.

The two quarterbacks are forever linked. Mayfield was the 1st overall pick in the 2018 NFL Draft, while Darnold was the 3rd overall pick.

Five quarterbacks join Josh Allen (#7, Buffalo Bills), Josh Rosen (#10, Arizona Cardinals) and Lamar Jackson (#32, Baltimore Ravens) in the first round. was obtained in
