Tokyo >> American swimmer Becca Myers has withdrawn from the Paralympics because the US Olympic and Paralympic Committee has stated that it will not allow her mother to be taken to Tokyo as a personal care assistant.

Deafblind as a result of a rare genetic disorder, Myers won three gold medals at the final Paralympics. In a statement explaining her withdrawal, she said the USOPC had approved her mother to act as an assistant at all international conferences since 2017.

The USOPC has tightened restrictions on the size of its delegation at the Tokyo Olympics due to the COVID-19 pandemic, leaving only one slot for the PCA to support 34 Paralympic swimmers. I said there is. According to the USOPC, PCA has over 27 years of coaching experience and over 11 years of Paralympic swimmer experience.

“This PCA joins the staff of 10 skilled swimmers with experience as blind swimmers, for a total of 11 staff for 34 athletes,” the USOPC said in a statement.

“The decisions we made on behalf of the team were not easy. It’s heartbreaking for athletes who don’t have access to previous support resources,” said the USOPC. “We are confident in the level of support we provide to Team USA and look forward to providing a positive athlete experience in an unprecedented era.”

The 26-year-old Myers said he decided to drop out because he “speaks for future generations of Paralympic athletes, hoping that he doesn’t have to experience the pain I’ve experienced.”

Some members of Congress saw Myers talk and were taken to social media to express their support.

“It’s a shame that she was denied an essential and reasonable accommodation, leading to her withdrawal from the Tokyo Olympics. Our Paralympic athletes are of even better value,” said Senator Ben Cardin, D-Md. .. Tweeted.
