The widow and son of the man who wrote the 1983 article that influenced the original “Top Gun” is suing Paramount Pictures over its sequel, “Top Gun: Maverick.”
In a complaint filed in federal court in California on Monday, Shosh Yonay and Yuval Yonay allege that their rights to the story of Ehud Yonay returned to them on January 24, 2020.
Yonays claims to have sent a notice to Paramount about regaining copyright in early 2018. However, Paramount reportedly went ahead and started filming in May 2018.
The proceedings allege that Paramount, which produced and distributed the sequel, did not reacquire the rights before the movie was released.
The proceedings seek unspecified damages, but include profits from the film, trying to prevent Paramount from distributing Maverick and other sequels to Top Gun.
A spokesperson for Paramount Pictures said in a statement, “The claim has no merit and we will actively protect ourselves.”
