Kansas City, Missouri — This week could be a major milestone in the fight against the COVID-19 pandemic.

An independent Vaccine Advisory Board of the US Food and Drug Administration will meet on Tuesday to discuss the potential approval of Pfizer’s vaccine for children ages 5-11.

Parents of children participating in local vaccine trials want their children to be vaccinated when the time comes for other parents.

Michael and Johanna Kelley enrolled their 2-year-old daughter Nora in Pfizer’s vaccine trial through Children’s Mercy Hospital in April.

“We trust science. We had the opportunity to understand what research involves, what they are trying to see, and how much they give her,” says Michael. Kelly said.

Nora’s trial phase focused on determining the correct dose. She was vaccinated twice. Each dose was one-third of the dose received by adults and older children.

One-third of that dose is considered to be approved by the FDA panel on Tuesdays between the ages of 5 and 11.

“We look forward to seeing the FDA make this leap, because we know how it makes sense not only for ourselves, but for the myriad families who want to vaccinate their children. Because it is, “Kelly said.

Dr. Natasha Bergart, a local pediatrician, said that due to the different doses, there may be some twists to be resolved when administering the vaccine.

“If experts agree that it should, we all want to get it for our patients, but trying to understand how to distribute it as soon as possible causes a bit of a problem at first. We will do it safely for all the children who need them, “says Bergart.

Kelly wants other parents to know that Nora is doing well. He wants to do their research when it’s time for them to vaccinate their own children.

“I want my parents to know that talking to a doctor is very important. Listen to experts and study science. If you do it yourself, it’s okay to do it for your kids,” Kelly said. Said.
