Parents Protest After Police Called on 7-Year-Old with Autism Who Kept Taking Off His Mask – NBC4 Washington – Washington, District of Columbia

A boy with autism continued to take off his mask, and after police were called to the boy’s school bus, his mother and dozens of related parents protested outside the State Board of Education (OSSE) on Wednesday night. ..

“I was really hurt,” Kioma Ol said about the moment DC police were called by her seven-year-old son Jedi after continuing to remove the mask about two weeks ago.

The Jedi and his 10-year-old brother board a school bus managed by OSSE.

“And he had a sensory processing condition with autism, so he took off his mask on the bus,” Oruh said. “The trust I put in OSSE was just violated.”

Oruh recorded the interaction between the police and the bus driver. She said they were both polite and did not blame the police response, but wondered why the bus dispatcher, who was talking to the driver at the time, called the law enforcement agency.

“I was very frustrated. I couldn’t believe why this happened, so I started crying,” Ol said.

The OSSE and spokesperson made a written statement as follows:

“OSSE’s student transport department bus driver sought MPD support to alleviate the situation where parents were stuck on the school bus, which undermined the ability of the bus to transport students to school. After the driver and coordinator discussed with the parents, a call was made and there was disagreement about the safety protocol for the child on the bus, and the parents refused to leave the car. “

Ol said he had never taken a bus. Her video begins when the police arrive.

She also notes that the bus driver should not exclude or return home if the Jedi “refuses to wear a mask unless they are symptomatic and their COVID contact information is known.” I wondered why I didn’t have one.

An OSSE spokesman said the Jedi school did not send doctor’s notes before the bus arrived.

Rally participants said police should not be called in to deal with children in need of special needs.

While OSSE is investigating, Oruh wants to be apologized and wants to change the way OSSE calls police to school children.

News4 has contacted the Jedi school for comment and is waiting for a reply.
