Kansas City, Missouri (KCTV)-Schools continue to struggle to find food to feed future leaders. Recently, the Park Hill School District has stated that it is also part of this growth trend.

Kansas City, Missouri (KCTV)-The turmoil in the national food supply chain is affecting Kansas City …

The district says it began stockpiling some items in the summer, believing that access could be restricted from time to time. The ability to store food continues to feed children in Northland.

The school’s warehouse sits quietly in the industrial area of Kansas City, where everything from gym equipment to flour bags is stored.

“We are definitely at stake and it’s a pure mess. We’re trying to find food. It’s absolutely painful not to be able to serve fruits and vegetables.”

“It wasn’t specially made for Covid, but it was very helpful,” said Ronda McCarrick, director of nutrition services.

District warehouses have taken on a new level of importance in storing piles of food that they wouldn’t otherwise have. Ten days ago, their major distributor, Call Wholesale, left the district to fill the void and broke the contract. The call is not answering KCTV’s phone call regarding the contract with Park Hill.

“I don’t think everyone understands the dynamics and implications of all of this,” McCarrick said. “We were a little surprised by that. At the same time, we were fortunate to have food and stockpiles in our warehouses, so unfortunately much more than in other districts that do not have this kind of resource. I was able to easily pivot to. “

The Park Hill School District says this is why warehouses can continue to serve students with minimal interruption. Instead of bringing food in boxes, you can bring food in pallets. That is, you can get food directly from the food source.

The district says it averages 8,600 meals a day and warehouses prevent shortages of goods.

“We can continue to feed our students. They are our future,” McCarrick said. “They are our main focus.”

Students may see menu changes and limited options, but they will not see an empty plate.
