Fort Lauderdale, Florida (AP) —Families of people killed, injured, and injured in the 2018 high school massacre in Parkland, Florida, have reached a $ 25 million settlement with the district.
More than 50 families at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland split funding from Broward County Public School.
The 17 murdered families receive the largest share. 16 out of 17 injured and 19 with severe mental distress will also be paid.
Family lawyers called the settlement “fair and noteworthy.” There was no immediate comment from the school district.
The settlement will take place after the district wins a state Supreme Court ruling that could limit damages to $ 300,000 without the approval of the state legislature.
A lawyer for the suspect’s archer, Nikolas Cruz, announced last week that he was found guilty of 17 single murders and 17 attempted murders.
Plea of guilty sets a penalty phase in which 23-year-old Cruz fights the death penalty and wants life imprisonment without parole.
The jury decides whether Cruz will be sentenced to death.
The judge wants the trial to begin in January.
The news brought some closures to the South Florida community more than three years after the attacks that triggered the national movement on gun control.
