New Port Richey, Florida — An average day in the public works sector in Pasco County keeps Thomas Reading and Eli Feliciano quite busy.
“Pipe replacement, pipe maintenance, drainage maintenance, dents, dents,” says Reading.
But Thursday was different. The pair finally rescued a kitten trying to rescue him from the New Port Richey storm drain.
Some heard the screams and called the county.
“We were worried. We knew it was going to rain, so we were trying to get him out as soon as possible,” Feliciano said.
Thomas and Eli descended into the drain, but the scared kitten did not cooperate.
“The kitten is about the size of my hand, and every time we try to catch him, the kitten is back in a very long pipe,” Reading said.
Finally, they used a food trap to take the kitten out. Even better, a colleague who returned to the office fell in love with the kitten.
“We actually named him Stormy for the storm sewers because he was trapped in the storm sewers and she adopted him the same day,” Reading said.
But their day wasn’t over. After a while, they say the woman suffered from heat stroke and knocked on a truck window.
“I called 911. Eli quickly jumped off the truck and helped me walk in the shade, water, and cold rags,” Reading said.
They were with her until the paramedics arrived and she was fine.
“It’s a blessing to help with that. Come here and help the cat, and back to back, help this woman. It was great.”
“It’s all a day’s work. I’m glad we’re here to help.”
