Everywhere in the New World, Haitian Vodun-related ritual music has taken advantage of African traditions and has remained largely unchanged. Jazz musicians have been exploring the African roots of their music for decades, and joining the church is drummer Chess Smith and his octet, an ensemble of four drummers in all.
