Washington-DC Fire and EMS tweeted that a pedestrian bridge collapsed on Washington DC’s Interstate 295 at noon Wednesday, injuring several people and blocking highways in both directions.

The bridge collapsed on Kenilworth Avenue before Pork Street NE, officials said in a tweet. The agency said the four were taken to the hospital, but there were no reports of being trapped in the wreckage.

Aerial footage from images posted by DCFire and EMS CNN-affiliated WJLA show One side of the bridge fell to the southbound I-295, but most of the northbound bridge remains mounted on an elevated platform.

Broken concrete and metal debris spreads over the six lanes of the highway, and the bridge is on top of some vehicles.

According to DC Fire and EMS, a dangerous goods unit was on site to mitigate diesel fuel leaks from trucks partially under the bridge, and at least one other vehicle was struck by debris.

According to a tweet from Metropolitan Area Transportation Operations Coordination (MATOC), all lanes of I-295 are blocked north of Benning Road. According to MATOC, the northbound delay was extended by about 3 miles, and the southbound lane was delayed by about 1.5 miles at 1:00 EST.

The Washington Metropolitan Police Department is in the early stages of investigating the cause of the collapse, police spokesman Alaina Gertz said.
